Abstract
Cosmetics is product that is designed to be used on parts of the human body and
is not intended to treat a particular disease, but only as a cleanser, beautify,
increase attractiveness or change appearance. Retinoic acid is the derivative of
vitamin A in the form of tretinoin (all-trans retinoic acid) which is indicated for
use in the treatment of acne. Retinoic acid is also an ingredient that is prohibited
from being used in cosmetic preparations because it can cause dry skin, burning
and teratogenicity (defects in the fetus). This research aimed to determine wheter
the preparation of whitening cream circulating in the city of Makassar contains
retinoic acid and to determine the retinoic acid levels contained in the
preparation of the whitening cream. Qualitative analysis of retinoic acid was
carrier out by using the Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) method which
produces dark spots when observed under a
nm lamp and by UV-Vis
spectrophotometry method which will produce a maximum wavelength equal to or
almost the same as the comparison standard, namely 344,10 nm. The assay was
carried out by means of UV-Vis spectrophotometry at the wafelegth of 344,10 nm.
The results showed that there were 3 positive samples containing retinoic acid,
namely samples A, B, and C. The retinoic acid content in sample A was 0,025%,
in sample B was 0,014%, and in sample C was 0,036%.
